Welcome to the curriculum page for the Data Privacy Project. We are pleased to share a set of learning tools that was created with and for library professionals. The curriculum contains a facilitator’s guide, presentation slides, and handouts, and permits remix and reuse under a Share Alike 4.0 Creative Commons license.
On this page you will find two different learning modules:
Provides a basic overview of what happens to patrons’ data and what are best practices for protecting patron privacy. Learners will review data flows for common tasks at the library, such as searching for something online, writing an email, and borrowing books, and become familiar with common influences on the nature of data flows, such as state and federal law, library data privacy policies, and company policies.
Deepens learners’ understanding of privacy and security and equip them with specific tools that they can share with patrons. This includes tools already available through the library as tools that are freely available online. Learners will have hands-on practice with privacy and security tools that they can use in their work and personal computing. The curriculum helps broaden learners’ understanding of libraries and privacy education.
In January 2018, we published “How Did We Get Here?: A Zine About Privacy at the Library,” based on parts of the “Digital Privacy: Fundamental Concepts for Libraries” curriculum. The zine is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, and PDFs are available for free download here.
